Franklin County DRJ Court observes Domestic Violence Awarness Month
Published on November 04, 2025
Each October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month shines a light on the ongoing effort to promote safety, healing, and prevention in our community. The Franklin County Domestic Relations and Juvenile Court joined the national observance this year by reaffirming its commitment to addressing the causes and consequences of family violence with compassion, accountability, and innovation.
Judge James Brown contributed an op-ed to The Columbus Dispatch highlighting how the court’s evolving approach is meeting this challenge head-on. In his column, Judge Brown noted that while overall homicide rates have declined in recent years, a growing share of those cases are related to domestic violence. He emphasized that the court’s work extends beyond adjudication to meaningful intervention.
“Our mission is not only to adjudicate cases but to create safer futures through evidence-based practices, innovative policies and strong community partnerships,” Judge Brown wrote. “We know that every decision we make has ripple effects on safety, stability and healing.”
Throughout the month, court staff demonstrated their support by wearing purple-ribbon pins and participating in “Wear Purple Day” on Oct. 16 — a visible reminder of solidarity with survivors and families affected by abuse.
By recognizing this month and elevating awareness within the workplace and community, the court renews its focus on helping families move toward futures free from fear and violence.
