Court hosts visitors from national conference

The Franklin County Domestic Relations and Juvenile Court hosted visitors from the National Association of State Judicial Educators (NASJE) Conference and shared how the Court works to serve survivors of domestic violence.

The guests visited as part of the conference’s experiential learning opportunity and toured the Court including the Family Protection Center. Director of Court Services, Cassandra Munoz, coordinated the event which also included NASJE visiting the Franklin County Municipal Court.
Administrative Judge James Brown was also able to share with them the Court’s mission.
“It was a privilege hosting the National Association of State Judicial Educators Conference and speaking with the attendees about the Court's role and approach to protecting domestic abuse survivors,” Judge James Brown said. “Hopefully attendees learned important lessons and can help others in the future."
The Family Protection Center is a secured area on the sixth floor for people to come and file civil protection orders. Along with allowing petitioners to feel safe while filing, the Court has also partnered with Nationwide Children’s Hospital Center for Family Safety and Healing to help connect petitioners with community resources.
The Center, one of the few in the country, is an innovative step the court implemented and has improved over the last few years.
Attendees also participated in empathy building exercises to encourage critical thinking about how courts across the country can better serve residents.
